Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

SLT: Selective Laser Trabeculotomy

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a widely used and effective procedure for lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. It involves using a laser to target specific cells in the trabecular meshwork, which is responsible for draining fluid from the eye. By selectively treating these cells, SLT can enhance the drainage of intraocular fluid, thereby reducing eye pressure.

Why an SLT?

  • Quick Procedure: SLT is typically completed in a matter of minutes, making it convenient for both patients and healthcare providers.

  • Outpatient: The procedure is commonly performed in-office or at an outpatient surgery center, so it does not require hospitalization.

  • Non-invasive: Unlike traditional surgical methods, SLT is minimally invasive and does not involve incisions, which contributes to a quicker recovery time.

  • Minimal Discomfort: Most patients experience only mild discomfort during the procedure, and anesthesia is usually not necessary.

  • Long-term Effectiveness: SLT can lower IOP effectively for many patients and can be repeated if needed.

SLT is often considered for patients who are not achieving sufficient IOP control with medications alone or for those who have difficulty adhering to medication regimens. It is generally well-tolerated and a helpful option in the management of glaucoma.
