About the Dry Eye Institute

Dry Eye Institute Logo

The Dry Eye Institute was formed to help people with the extraordinarily common problems of dry eyes. This disease has recently been studied and many novel and amazing treatments are now available to help every patient with this problem. It has been discovered that dry eye disease is not the same for everyone. Simply using artificial tears, which has been prescribed for all with dry eyes in the past, is not a good treatment and only a moderately successful band-aid to the problem. At the DEI you can expect that we will thoroughly investigate your individual problem and tailor a treatment regimen aimed directly at your issues. The underlying issue in dry eye disease is either a problem with an over drainage of tears or, more commonly, a problem with the production of tears or certain components of tears. At the Dry Eye Institute, we have invested in the latest technology to be able to ascertain the underlying cause, whether it be a drainage or production issue. After a thorough examination by one of our highly trained doctors with the help of our friendly and knowledgeable staff, we will determine the appropriate treatment needed for you as an individual.

Diagnostic Services

LipiView

LipiView is a diagnostic test that provides detailed images of your meibomian glands, which produce the tear film essential for healthy eyes. Blockages in these glands can lead to long-term damage and reduced tear production. During the test, we invert your lower eyelid to assess inflammation and blockage. Regular imaging helps us track changes and act quickly to restore proper function.

InflammaDry

InflammaDry is a quick, 10-minute test that detects inflammation markers in your tears. Elevated markers indicate the need to reduce inflammation as part of your treatment plan.

TearLab

TearLab measures the osmolarity (quality and composition) of your tears. Poor tear quality can cause excessive watering, itchiness, and irritation. This test helps us determine the best course of action to restore a healthy tear balance.

Staining

We use corneal and conjunctival staining to map dry spots on the surface of your eye. This painless procedure involves applying a colored drop to highlight areas of dryness. The process takes about 10 minutes and helps us pinpoint the root cause for targeted treatment.

Treatment Services

LipiFlow

LipiFlow is an advanced treatment for clearing blockages in the meibomian glands. Using heat and gentle massage, this 15-minute procedure removes debris, oil, and dead skin that clog your glands. While you may experience temporary discomfort, LipiFlow promotes healthier tear production. Like a dental cleaning, this procedure may need to be repeated annually.

Zest

Zest feels similar to a light tickle and leaves your lids fresh and healthy. This treatment is often combined with Lipiview for optimal results.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

IPL therapy reduces inflammation around your eyes, allowing meibomian glands to function properly again. Each session takes 15 minutes, with a total of 4–5 treatments spaced over several months. Post-treatment, you should avoid direct sun exposure and wear sunscreen and a hat for 3–5 days to prevent sunburn.

Punctal Plugs

Punctal plugs are a surgical option for dry eyes. These tiny plugs are placed in your tear ducts to retain tears in your eyes. The procedure is quick, with no downtime, though mild discomfort may occur for a few hours or days afterward. Plugs can be temporary or permanent, depending on your needs.
