Durysta

What is Durysta?

Durysta is a small, biodegradable implant that is inserted into the eye, where it releases the medication bimatoprost gradually over time. Bimatoprost works by increasing the outflow of fluid from the eye, which lowers IOP. This is important because elevated IOP can damage the optic nerve, leading to permeant vision loss.

Key Features of Durysta:

  • Sustained Release: Once implanted, Durysta continuously releases bimatoprost for several months, reducing the need for daily eye drops.

  • Biodegradable: The implant dissolves naturally over time, so there's no need for removal once it's been placed.

  • Minimally Invasive: The implantation procedure is relatively quick and simple, done in office, and requires only a local anesthetic.

Benefits:

  • Convenience: Reduces the need for daily eye drops, making it easier for people with glaucoma to stick to their treatment plan.

  • Effective IOP Control: It’s proven to be effective in reducing intraocular pressure, helping to prevent optic nerve damage caused by glaucoma.

  • Low Risk of Medication Non-Adherence: For patients who struggle with remembering or properly applying eye drops, Durysta offers a reliable alternative.

Who Is It For?

Durysta is intended for people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, conditions where the fluid pressure inside the eye is elevated. It can be particularly useful for:

  • Patients who are not adherent to daily eye drops or who have difficulty using them.

  • Patients who prefer a longer-lasting treatment with fewer injections or applications.

Follow up Care:

  • Minimal Recovery Time: Most patients expereince little to no downtime after the procedure. Some have mild irritation, , the resolves quickly.

  • Follow Up: Dr. Smith will continue to see you after you have the implant. He will monitor your IOPs and ensure the implant is properly working.
